A Portrait for Mom
On my last visit home, I took a photo of my mom, Reva. I knew I had to paint it. With a flight booked to go back and be with her in her final days, I had a three-week deadline to create something that captured her spirit.
This is the story of that painting. It's not a story of stress, but of process. Painting, for me, is like life: you build it layer by layer, and you trust that you can fix things along the way. You just head in a general direction, and the destination reveals itself.
This painting became so precious to her that she chose to be buried in the outfit it depicts. This experience, this act of love against a deadline, became the seed for the Love Portrait Program.
