“Brothers in Arms”
Adapted from a powerful photo by John Minchill taken during the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, this painting was my attempt to process a moment that gripped the nation. I was especially moved by the raw emotion of the young men — their strength, pain, and solidarity.
As I painted, I found myself empathizing deeply with the protesters. There is a quiet, poignant detail that stayed with me: the wedding ring on the man at the far left. It reminded me that these were not symbols or slogans, but real people with families, responsibilities, and futures at stake.
At the same time, I felt sorrow that such a tragic event became, in many ways, politicized and manipulated by both sides of the media. This work reflects my complicated feelings of admiration, grief, and hope. I painted it not as a political statement, but as an act of human connection. I hope that as a society we can continue learning from these moments and move toward greater understanding, healing, and unity.
